Join us for an exciting day of sightseeing and education as we leave the central city and head to Birdlings Flat where you will be able to fossick for semi-precious agates and other interesting rocks. We will then head to Hinewai Reserve which is an ecological restoration project on the Banks Peninsula. Covering 1250 hectare of land it is a privately owned and managed conservation initiative that showcases the power of nature to return to a landscape with minimal human intervention. Here you will be met by Hugh Wilson who will provide a brief history of the Hinewai. The reserve has many kilometres of walking tracks and we will take a walk along the ‘west track’ to the beech terrace that is the only remaining stand of mature red beech in Canterbury outside the Southern Alps.
After enjoying your packed lunch we will take to the Giants House, know as ‘the Happiest Garden on Earth’ . This garden is seriously playful, extraordinary and wonderland with a fully integrated combination of art works and gardens. This garden has a 6 Star rating from New Zealand Gardens Trust, and we are sure everyone will enjoy this visit.
From here we will make a quick stop at the Commons Café where you can purchase coffee, for that much needed dose of caffeine (at own cost) and a chance for a quick look around neighbouring shops before we head back to Christchurch.
Clothing for the day:
We recommend that you wear good walking/hiking shoes for the terrain on this day (see disclaimer below regarding shoes below) out together . We also recommend that delegates wear ‘layers’ as the weather can get very cold at this time of year and may also rain, so a waterproof jacket would be good to include.

DISCLAIMER:
Shoes: New Zealand takes biosecurity seriously. Please declare all walking/hiking equipment at the border when you enter New Zealand. Specifically, we ask that you do clean your proposed shoes for this fieldtrip prior to leaving your home country. Research by your hosts has shown that a solution with household detergent is suitable for reducing the number of viable pathogen spores on shoes and tents. We ask that you do this to protect the special places you are visiting from any microbes or weed seeds that might otherwise be communicated on your shoes.
